Premier Hockey League

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Premier Hockey League (PHL) is the top division in Indian field hockey. There are currently seven teams playing in the league. The PHL was founded in 2005.

history

The league was initiated to increase interest in hockey in India. Hockey fans have recently migrated more and more to cricket . Hockey is Indian national sport. The country has won eight Olympic gold medals, making it a record Olympic champion. In addition, the Indian national hockey team was the men's 1975 Hockey World Championship .

One of the main reasons for the decline in popularity of the existing competitions has been the emergence of corporate teams that do not have a consistent following. The PHL, on the other hand, tries to bring in regionality. Therefore, she started with teams from traditional hockey strongholds such as Mumbai , Punjab , Orissa and Tamil Nadu , but also with teams from Hyderabad and Bangalore .

founding

The competition was initially held with 5 teams. The foundation was initiated by the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) with the support of ESPN India. In 2007, the second division was abolished, except for the 2006 champions, all teams were dissolved. Division 1 then continued to play with 7 teams.

The 5 founding members of the Premier Hockey League are Bangalore Hi-Fliers , Chennai Veerans , Hyderabad Sultans , Maratha Warriors and Sher-e-Jalandhar .

New features

The fundamental difference is that the games are divided into four: each quarter lasts 17.5 minutes, while a hockey game is usually played in two halves of 35 minutes. This format is tailor-made for advertising times.

The teams are each allowed to take two time-outs that last 120 seconds. The time-outs are mandatory. The first time-out can be taken in the first or second quarter, the other in the third or fourth quarter. The coaches are warned by officials five minutes before the end of the second or fourth quarter. If the coach should not take the time-out two minutes before the end, it will be imposed by the officials.

There is also a "voluntary" break for each team. It can be taken at any time and is also two minutes long.

Each team may field a maximum of five foreigners. If a game is stalled, the number of players will be gradually reduced until a result is achieved.

In addition, the seven-meter shooting mode has been changed so that it now resembles that of Major League Soccer : Each team provides five shooters. They try to score a goal with as many shots as necessary within 8 seconds. He starts at the 25 meter line.
