Prestea is a city in the West African state of Ghana , in the Western Region administrative region in the southwest of the country and about 50 km north of the coast of the Atlantic Ocean on the western bank of the Ankobra River. The city is part of the Wassa West District . A railway line connects Prestea with Tarkwa and beyond with the coastal town of Sekondi-Takoradi . About 30,000 people live in the city.

Gold has been mined in Prestea since 1873, until 1965 by various independent companies that were united by the government at that time. The World Bank granted a refurbishment loan in 1985, but after three years of continuous losses, the mines were privatized in 1994. Since 1999, the majority of the mining rights have been held by Golden Stars Resources . Due to the open pit there are environmental problems such as the storage of the spoil near the hospital or the contamination of the river with toxic sewage, as happened in October 2004. The tremors caused by the detonations caused damage to the city's buildings.

The gold mines are a tourist attraction, among other things because of the smelter, in which the gold is melted into bars, as well as two tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course.

The Prestea Senior High Technical School provides further education. There is also the Prestea Goldfields International School.

In 2002 and 2003, the local soccer club Prestea Mines Stars played in the top Ghanaian division, the Ghana Premier League . The stadium was renovated with financial support from Bogoso Gold Limited .

A partnership connects Prestea and the Protestant churches in Billigheim-Ingenheim .
