The ES 5 , built in 1913 with a 1'C1 ' wheel arrangement, was the Prussian State Railways ' first electric locomotive with three coupled axles. With the exception of the drive motor , the electrical equipment was essentially the same as that of the EG 501 , which had been in service a year earlier .

history

Like the ES 1 to ES 3 , the ES 5 was designed for operation on relatively flat stretches, but could generate considerably more tractive power and was superior to the equally powerful ES 3, primarily because of its higher reliability. The chassis design, however, led to uneven running at higher speeds, so that the maximum speed had to be reduced to 110 km / h, although its engine power was sufficient to move 350-t trains at 120 km / h. The outbreak of the First World War prevented the laying in the Wroclaw network for tests in steeper terrain. The ES 5 remained in the Leipzig Hbf West workshop until it was retired in 1923.
