The Prussian EV 6 , taken over as DR class E 73 3 when it was commissioned , was an electric locomotive procured by the Prussian State Railways for use on the Altona port railway . It was supposed to replace the Prussian EV 1/2 , which was used on this port railway in 1911 .

construction

The basic construction of the EV 6 was a bridge frame made of profile steel with a steel box attached, which enclosed the engine room and the driver's cabs on both sides on the vertically smooth front wall. On the roof, next to the main switch, there were two pantographs , each with a grinding bow. The bridge frame rested on two bogies , each with two individually driven wheel sets with wheel diameters of 1600 mm. The wheel sets each had a hollow shaft drive .

Electric drive

The unusual overhead line supply voltage of 6.3 kV and a frequency of 25 Hz was used by the Altonaer Hafenbahn as a result of the takeover of vehicles and equipment from the trial operation with this power system in the years 1903 to 1905 on the Schöneweide – Spindlersfeld branch . The EV 6, which was specially built for the Altona port railway, had to be designed for this voltage. The power supply was provided from the supply network of the Hamburg-Altona urban and suburban railway , which had been operated with this system since 1904, for which the Leverkusenstrasse power station was also conveniently located.

Each of the four wheel sets was driven by a pair of separately ventilated AC series motors via the hollow shaft drive. The main transformer , which was also externally ventilated and oil-cooled , provided the reduced voltage for the motors.

history

The EV 6 was ordered by the Prussian administration of the Altona port railway in spring 1924 and delivered to them in 1926.

When designing the locomotive, the concerns and needs of a port railway were not primarily taken as a basis, rather the EV 6 was apparently intended to serve not only as a port railway locomotive but also as a test vehicle for various technologies that had not yet been sufficiently tested. The running gear with the relatively large wheels was more typical for express train operations and the hollow shaft drive was comparatively complex for slow port railway operations with a maximum of 50 km / h. The sometimes occurring "teething problems" of these still immature elements caused high maintenance costs.

Upon delivery, the EV 6 was redrawn as E 73 06 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn, now in charge . During its entire service from 1926 to 1954, it was assigned to the Ohlsdorf depot . In 1954 the shutdown took place due to the foreseeable discontinuation of the operation with 6.3 kV alternating current in connection with the complete conversion of the Hamburg S-Bahn to direct current operation. At that time, the E 73 06 was transferred from the Deutsche Bundesbahn to the Munich Freimann AW and acquired by a scrap dealer in 1955.
