history

Thomas Price came to the Spartanburg District around 1793. He became a land owner and entrepreneur. He ran the shop and post office next to his home. The post office was in operation from 1811 to 1820. The house was on the Spartanburg to Cross Anchor stagecoach line . Price also managed 80  ares of arable land and ran an inn and stagecoach station.

When his wife Anne died in 1821, she left a 42-page inventory. In addition to the furniture, this included 25 slaves and agricultural machines. The house was furnished with a four-poster bed , a wind-up clock, a desk, and a bookcase that held copies of The Spectator , The Tatler, and other publications. The farm's equipment included several millstones, a loom , a spinning wheel and a cotton pecking machine, as well as a side saddle .

The house is now the home of the Spartanburg County Historical Association. It is accessible all year round on Sunday afternoons. In the summer months it can also be visited on Saturdays.

architecture

The house is a two and a half story brick building with a gambrel roof . At the time, such roofs were unusual in Upstate South Carolina . The 45 cm thick masonry is set in the Dutch composite, darker fired stones were used for the binder stones.

The walls and ceilings of the interior are paneled with wood . On the ground floor there is a salon, which is called the Pine Room because of its pine wood , and a large dining room for both the family and carriage travelers. The two rooms are separated by the central main hall, which extends over both floors. The upper floor has two larger and one small bedrooms. A bedroom for male and female travelers is located in the attic.

An extension on the rear was built around 1820 and was probably used to accommodate servants. The masonry of this extension is carried out in the English network. This extension was later converted into a kitchen.
