Priestly Community of Saint Martin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The priestly community of Saint Martin (French communauté Saint-Martin ) is an institute under papal law . It was founded in 1976 by Jean-François Guérin , a priest from the Archdiocese of Tours (France).

history

Abbé Jean-François Guérin worked in Paris between 1965 and 1976. As a chaplain in the Sacré-Cœur Basilica , he was a spiritual companion in great demand among young people. Many of them later joined religious orders , especially among the Benedictines and the Discalced Carmelites . Others wanted to become secular priests , while living together and cultivating the liturgical spirit that they had got to know from Abbé Guérin. That is, they are based on both the Latin-Gregorian tradition of the Roman rite and the liturgical movement .

Since the then Archbishop of Genoa, Giuseppe Cardinal Siri , wanted to support the renewal of priestly formation in France, he invited Jean-François Guérin and the first candidates for priesthood to the Archdiocese of Genoa in 1976 . The Community of Saint Martin was founded as a community under episcopal law under the responsibility of Cardinal Siri. Abbé Guérin and the candidates for the priesthood settled in the Capuchin monastery of Genoa-Voltri. The seminarians received their academic training in the seminary of Genoa, while Abbé Guérin was responsible for their spiritual and pastoral training.

In 1983 the Priestly Community of St. Martin was given the first apostolate in the Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon in south-eastern France. In the following years they took over other parishes in France. In 1993 the opportunity arose to leave Italy and relocate the training center to the French village of Candé-sur-Beuvron near Blois (approx. 190 km south of Paris). In 2014, the training and parent company relocated to Évron in a former Benedictine monastery.

In 2000 the community received papal recognition. Today the priestly community of Saint Martin has around 125 priests and deacons and 80 candidates for the diaconate or priesthood . The community works in many French dioceses, as well as in Cuba and Italy . In addition, priests are in the service of the Holy See in Rome or the nunciatures .

In May 2020, the Archdiocese of Cologne announced that in September 2020 three priests of the St. Martin Community will settle in the Neviges pilgrimage cathedral and establish a new branch in the previous Franciscan monastery.

spirituality

The spirituality of the community is based primarily on community life and the celebration of the liturgical year . It has its roots in Abbé Guérin's spiritual relationship with the Benedictine congregation of Solesmes . This was Oblate of the Fontgombault Abbey . That is why the Lectio divina and Gregorian chant are especially cultivated.
