Primo Central

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Primo Central is an interdisciplinary index of academic materials offered by library software provider Ex Libris since spring 2010 . Electronic books and journal articles are mainly recorded. As a library service provider, Ex Libris does not have its own content, but rather obtains data from primary and secondary publishers, aggregators and open access collections. Depending on the agreement with the provider, bibliographic metadata , abstracts, keywords and / or full texts are offered. The Primo Central Index is hosted and maintained by Ex Libris in a cloud computing environment. Libraries can integrate it - if desired together with the local library catalog - into a discovery and delivery system, and thus enable their customers to conduct a comprehensive search. Each library can make individual settings with regard to the content used, its display and the ranking of the results.

target group

With the interdisciplinary academic content of Primo Central, Ex Libris is primarily aimed at academic libraries. Even if Primo Central is mainly used in the Anglo-American region, there are already libraries in the German-speaking region in which it is used. These include the Münster University and State Library , the Vienna University Library , the Salzburg University Library and the library of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich . In addition, the Cooperative Library Association Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV) offers a consortium solution that is used by the university libraries of the Free University of Berlin , the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin as well as the University and State Library in Düsseldorf .

costs

Primo Central is chargeable. The service is available by subscription with contractually stipulated extension and termination periods at a fixed price.

Content

The Primo Central Index comprises approx. 400 million data records and, according to the operator, is growing continuously. The index contains mainly English-language e-books and articles from around 150,000 journals. According to Ex Libris , the proportion of non-English-language sources is to be increased.

Range of functions

Primo Central is an index of scientific literature that is aggregated from various sources. It can be integrated into discovery and delivery systems together with the local catalog data of a library. This can be Primo from Ex Libris , but also another product, e.g. B. the open source software Vufind . An integrated search is possible via the interface of the respective front-end system. Various customization options are available to the user library. For example, it can influence whether its customers should only be offered licensed or unlicensed content during research. In addition, settings can be made with regard to the ranking of the hit lists so that locally available sources are prioritized . Functions such as narrowing down extensive hit lists using faceted browsing, data transfer into reference management programs or Web 2.0 functions such as social tagging can be enabled for library users via the respective front-end system .

Technical basics / system architecture

Inquiries can be made to Primo Central via the front-end system used in the respective user library. When researching various sources, there is no meta search , but a query in a comprehensive index that must be updated regularly. A so-called publishing platform is located within Primo Central: In Primo Central, the data is “harvested” from various systems before indexing , then checked and then different formats and duplicates are merged. The quality of the data consolidation depends largely on the quality of the individual data made available by the various suppliers. Indexing only takes place after normalization . A link resolver is required for direct access to a licensed full text as well as for availability control in the front-end system . Primo Central works with Lucene for indexing . The so-called "Deep Search" also offers the option of searching data from Primo Central using other search engines , such as B. FAST or Zebra to research. There is a Java interface for this.
