Location of the Prinz-Eugen-Kaserne in Bavaria

The Prinz-Eugen-Kaserne , originally called Lohengrin-Kaserne , was a barracks in Munich in the Bogenhausen district . Until they moved to Ingolstadt, it was the location of the pioneer school and technical college of the army for structural engineering . The Prinz-Eugen-Park , a residential area with around 1,800 apartments and additional infrastructure , has been under construction on the former site of the barracks since 2017 .

location

The barracks was located in the southeast corner of the Oberföhring district in Munich's 13 Bogenhausen district on Cosimastrasse opposite the confluence with Lohengrinstrasse, which gave it its alternative name. The occasional designation as "Englschalkinger Kaserne" is misleading, because the barracks bordered Englschalking to the east and south , but was not in this part of the city.

history

The barracks in 1938 as a news barracks for the Air Force of the Armed Forces built. It was originally called Lohengrinkaserne , after a nearby street of the same name. The architect of the facility was Viktor Freymadl . After the Second World War , it was taken over by the US occupation forces and renamed Peterson Barracks . At times it served as a warehouse for displaced persons .

After it was taken over by the German Armed Forces , a “Pioneers Troop School” was established in the barracks in July 1956. The barracks received their last name in 1964 after Prince Eugene . From 1966 the local school for pioneers bore the additional designation "Academy of the Army for Civil Engineering" and from 1971 the name "Pioneer School and Technical College of the Army for Structural Engineering". The last buildings on the area were completed in 1976. Because of the subsequent lack of capacity, the training of NCOs was relocated to the Munich radio barracks in 1976 .

From 2001 planning began for the relocation of the pioneer training. After the opening of the new location in Ingolstadt, the training center in Munich closed in January 2009, and since the end of March 2009 the area has been in civilian hands again. When the pioneer school in Munich was in existence, a total of 238,000 members of the Bundeswehr were trained there.

Area and today's residential area

The former barracks area covers 29.7 hectares. After the military buildings were demolished, 1,600 apartments were to be built there from 2011. The swimming pool and plunge pool and temporarily also the sports hall are excluded from the demolition of the buildings. In the meantime, the sports hall has also been demolished. The existing trees should be largely preserved.

A primary school and an old people's home are planned as infrastructure facilities . The establishment of an elderly and service center is also being considered. The Ruth Drexel Primary School opened in 2017.

After an initial competition, five architectural offices were commissioned with further planning. In March 2010 the winning design was announced and the successful GSP Architects Grüner + Schnell + Partner working group with Rainer Schmidt Landscape Architects was commissioned to further revise their design.
