Polikárp Zakar OCist (born June 8, 1930 in Ókér, Yugoslavia , today Serbia , as Ferenc Zakar ; † September 17, 2012 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian Cistercian monk and church historian and canon lawyer . He was Abbot General of the Cistercian Order and Abbot of the Cistercian Monastery of Zirc in Hungary .

Life

After attending the Cistercian high school in Baja, Hungary, Ferenc Zakar entered the Cistercian monastery Zirc in Hungary, where he took the religious name Polikárp. The dressing took place on August 29, 1948. After studying philosophy and theology for two years in Zirc , he made his temporary profession on August 30, 1949. In 1950 he completed a theological doctorate in Rome. With the abolition of the Hungarian monasteries under the Stalinist government of Mátyás Rákosi , he and 27 other religious were arrested and later handed over to the Russian occupation forces in Austria. On January 1, 1954, he made solemn profession and was ordained a priest on September 4, 1955 in Switzerland .

Zakar initially worked in the Generalate of the Cistercian Order in Rome. After studying church history at the Pontifical Gregorian University , he was a lecturer from 1960 and full professor for church history at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo from 1966 . At the Pontifical Lateran University he completed a doctorate from 1969 to 1972 and taught canon law at Sant'Anselmo. From 1978 to 1985 he was dean of the theological faculty at Sant'Anselmo in Rome.

He was an advisor and member of various congregations of the Holy See , including the Congregation for Religious and the Congregation for the Causes of Saints .

From 1985 to 1995 Polikárp Zakar was the 80th Abbot General of the Cistercian Order . After the Hungarian monastery Zirc, which was dissolved by the state in 1950, was again admitted in 1989, he worked there from 1996 to 2008 as Abbot of Zirc and Abbot President of the Congregation of Zirc, also he was professor of canon law at the Catholic Péter Pázmány University . After the official end of his term as abbot and Präses he headed Abbey and Congregation until the election of his successor on 20 December 2010 as an administrator . On January 25, 2000, Pope John Paul II gave him the personal title of Archabbot .

Zakar is the author of numerous books and scientific articles. From 1963 to 2007 he was editor of the scientific order journal Analecta Cisterciensia .
