history

In a boundary description from 1435 the rocks are called "Scheferstain", 1536 "Schäferstein" and 1716 "Schieferstein". They were popularly known as "Girglstein", derived from the nearby Girgel cave. On November 25, 1911, the rocks, a little off the beaten track, were renamed “Prinzenfelsen” in the presence of members of the Fichtelgebirgsverein at a ceremony in order to promote their popularity. The Prinz-Ludwig-Felsen is the larger and the Prinz-Leopold-Felsen is the smaller one. This name was chosen to commemorate the visits of the two Wittelsbachers to the Fichtel Mountains in 1905 and 1910 respectively.

The Prinzenfelsen has been designated as an important geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (Geotope number: 479R024).

Tourist development

In 1880, the Fichtel Mountains section of the German-Austrian Alpine Club created a gangway from the former forester's house Silberhaus zum Girgelstein. In 1913, FGV members organized a forest festival at the Prinzenfelsen in order to use the proceeds to create a staircase. The ascent system has been looked after by the FGV local group Nagel since then and has been repeatedly repaired or renewed. The Franconian Mountain Trail has been leading to the Prinzenfelsen since 2007 .
