The Hohe Matze , also called Hohe Mätze , is an 813 m high mountain in the southern part of the Fichtelgebirge between Nagel and Tröstau . The summit consists of a stack of oval-shaped rocks. The slope is forested and can be walked on hiking trails.
Karlstein Castle is said to have once stood on the Hohen Matze, but this cannot be documented. The name, in 1393 still "mazen", later "meze" and "mätze", means pasture mountain. The watershed between the North Sea and the Black Sea, the 50th parallel and the Höhenweg of the Fichtelgebirgsverein run across the Hohe Matze .
