The Private Hanse University (PHU) in Rostock - Warnemünde was a private , state-recognized university in Germany. It was closed in March 2009 due to a lack of profitability, after teaching had been discontinued in October 2008. She had a total of five, at last only three students.

The management consultants Peter L. Pedersen and Knut Einfeldt took part in the 2002 business plan competition of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with the project to run a privately owned university and took first and third place. In 2004 the decision to locate the future private university was made in Rostock . In September 2004 the Private Hanse University GmbH & Co KGaA was founded and it was entered in the Rostock commercial register .

In the spring of 2007, the Hamburg investment company Educationtrend AG took over 97.8 percent of the shares in the Hanseatic University and increased the share capital at the same time. Educationtrend is 100 percent owned by Aton GmbH in Fulda .

The state recognition took place on July 24, 2007 by the Ministry of Education of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with reservations (i.e. with conditions). The founding president was Wolf Schäfer , formerly Vice-President of the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg .

Co-founder Peter L. Pedersen resigned from his position as managing director on March 31, 2008 after the main shareholder changed the university's goals.

The Hanseatic University of Rostock was unable to attract enough students for the 2008/2009 winter semester either. In February 2009 it was announced that the university would be closed in March 2009.

Education

Studies began on October 22, 2007 with four students in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. Teaching lasted only two semesters and was discontinued in the 2008 winter semester due to a lack of students. Bachelor courses in "Business Administration", "Business Information Technology" and law were considered. “Global Management” was planned as a master’s course. In addition, the legal training should lead to the legal state examination .

The PHU should also after the prerequisites doctoral degrees received, but this did not happen. In addition to the university's own research, the PHU wanted to cooperate closely with research and development-oriented companies. So-called affiliated institutes were also planned. However, despite the appointment of professors, there were no recognizable research activities or even research collaborations.
