Priyanka Vadra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra ( Hindi प्रियंका गांधी वाड्रा , born January 12, 1972 in Delhi , India ) is the daughter of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi and a member of the Nehru Gandhi family . In the English-language Indian press she is usually addressed by her maiden name Priyanka Gandhi ( Hindi प्रियंका गांधी ).

Professional career

Priyanka Gandhi was born in 1972 as the second child of Rajiv Gandhi and his wife Sonia from Italy. Her paternal grandmother Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister of India at the time . She has an older brother, Rahul Gandhi, who was born in 1970 . Priyanka grew up in Delhi and attended the Modern School and the Jesus and Mary College of the University of Delhi in New Delhi . She then studied psychology at the University of Delhi.

A decisive event in her life was the murder of her grandmother Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 when Priyanka was 12 years old, and the murder of her father Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991 when she was 19 years old. After her mother Sonia Gandhi took over the leadership of the Congress Party in 1998, she actively supported it in the election campaign before the parliamentary elections in 1998 and 1999 . Political observers then suggested that Priyanka Vadra (who had meanwhile married) would become a future draft horse of the Congress party . However, she stated that she campaigned solely to support her mother and had no intentions of becoming a politician. In the period that followed, she did not actually take any political offices or functions. During the election campaign leading up to the 2004 general election , she coordinated her mother's campaign and also supported her brother's election campaign without becoming politically active on her own behalf. Since then, there has been repeated speculation that Priyanka Vadra would get into politics after all. Despite various requests from leading Congress politicians, she has always refused to do so.

Private

On February 18, 1997, Priyanka Gandhi married the Indian businessman Robert Vadra and took his family name. The two have two children, Raihan and Miraya. The Indian press dealt for a while with the playboy-like demeanor of Robert Vadra, who liked to pose with sunglasses on one of his numerous motorcycles. In an interview with the Times of India , Vadra said that he could imagine going into politics if his family supported it. The congress party, which has been negative so far, then has to accept that ("If I do join politics, it will be with my family's consent. It will be planned. Then I suppose, people will have to accept it.").

Priyanka Vadra is interested in Buddhist philosophy and practices Vipassana .
