The Probst Jesar (er) See is a lake in the city of Lübenheen in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is a little indented circular body of water east of the eponymous place. It is about 340 meters long and up to 225 meters wide. The water has a circumference of about one kilometer. The Probst Jesar forest pool is located on the east bank. The lake is located on the edge of the Elbe-Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania river landscape biosphere reserve .

The Bundeswehr maintains a military training area near the east bank .

Emergence

The Probst Jesar See is a pinge . The collapse of underground crevasses created a funnel on the surface of the earth. The lake is the largest of about 15 of these nearby pings. The name part Jesar in the place name comes from the Slavic word for "lake", cf. Upper Sorbian jězor .

According to legend, there was a beautiful meadow with oak trees at the place of the lake. When begging gypsies were driven out by hard-hearted peasants, the gypsies gathered and cut off the head of a horse grazing there, filled it with curses with mercury and threw it onto the meadow. This horse's head sank into a deep hole in the earth. This filled with water and the whole village of Probst Jesar threatened to flood. When the farmers noticed this, they asked the gypsies to put a stop to the disaster. The farmers listened to them and after promising rich gifts, the disaster was averted.

The water level fell by about 10 centimeters due to the drowning of the Lübheen potash and rock salt mine , which is about 1.5 kilometers away, in December 1916.
