The Profound Lake ( Russian озеро Глубокое , osero Glubokoje - "Deep Lake") is a lake on King George Island , the largest of the South Shetland Islands . It is located in the northeast of the Fildes Peninsula, northwest of the Jasper Point headland protruding into Maxwell Bay . The lake measures approximately 315 × 252 meters and is up to 16 meters deep.

The lake was named озеро Глубокое on a map from 1973 after mapping by the 13th Soviet Antarctic Expedition in 1968 from Bellingshausen Station . The bay is labeled "Lake Glubokoye" on an English-language map by the same authors. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee translated the Russian name into English in 1979 to avoid duplication with Lake Glubokoye (Russian also озеро Глубокое ) at the Molodjoschnaja station in Enderbyland .

The “deep lake” has no surface drainage, but feeds a source that lies in a valley that extends from the lake to the southeast. The spring water is considerably colder than the water of the lake, as this obviously flows to the spring via the permafrost table.

The Uruguayan research station Base Científica Antártica Artigas is located on the lake .
