Progressive Rock Bibliography

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Progressive Rock Bibliography ( Progbibliography for short ) is an English-language Progressive Rock website registered in Germany . It is a comprehensive bibliography on progressive rock .

history

The idea arose from a search list for a private book collection that was put online in summer 2001. Thanks to the cooperation of numerous progressive rock listeners around the world, this list grew very quickly into a comprehensive bibliography that tries to cover the published literature in different categories as completely as possible. It was therefore soon no longer a simple inventory of the collection and was used by scientists and authors all over the world. Inquiries (in German and English) were also possible. The website was updated every two to four weeks, but there have been no updates since October 2008.

content

The content of the website consists of bibliographical data on 705 books and articles on the subject of progressive rock / art rock. These are primarily journalistic texts (especially band biographies) and musicological texts. In addition, there are songbooks , which are generally not very well recorded in bibliographical terms and can therefore only be recorded incompletely on the Progbibliography pages. Articles from music magazines, fanzines etc. are not included . All books and articles are recorded with the author's name, title, subtitle, series title, place, year and ISBN, and there are links to numerous online texts. Missing information is marked; There are gaps in publications that are not in German, English, French or Italian. Japanese literature is also quite extensively recorded (title translated into English, with reference to the publication in Japanese). An attempt was also made to record publications in the process of being published and those in the process of being produced, as far as the webmaster was in contact with the authors.

In addition, on the pages of the Progressive Rock Bibliography there is a rich (if not nearly complete) list of literary (and philosophical etc.) allusions and quotations in Prog from the beginnings in the late sixties to the present. This includes the obvious sources like the Bible and Lord of the Rings as well as the remote and isolated, e.g. B. the Shastrian writings of India (on Yes ' Tales from Topographic Oceans ) or The King of Elfland's Daughter by Edward Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (on Glass Hammer's The Inconsolable Secret ).

The content framework extends from the so-called Big Five ( Yes , Emerson, Lake & Palmer , King Crimson , Gentle Giant and Genesis ) to the fringes of Progressive Rock. The literature on Procol Harum , Mike Oldfield , Jon Lord and The Moody Blues is included, but Pink Floyd is left out (for practical reasons). In addition, literature on bands that are not counted as progressive rock is listed if they had earlier or later members of progressive rock bands in their ranks (such as Badfinger or Asia ).

A short list of introductory or basic publications is of interest to beginners in prog literature.

construction

The website consists of an introduction of a (partially annotated) List of all the remaining pages of the website thematically gathered title. The same list is also available without comment (i.e. printer-friendly). There are also thematically sorted lists. The offer is supplemented by an introduction to prog literature, a list of desiderata , the aforementioned extensive list of literary allusions and quotations in the prog, as well as a list of songbooks and a list of links.
