action

The student Ryō Takatsuki lives alone with his mother, as his father has long since left them. He used to teach him hand-to-hand combat techniques so that he is physically superior to his classmates. The girl Katsumi Akagi is close to him, they have known each other for a long time.

One day the boy Hayato Shingū is transferred to school. He immediately starts a fight with Ryou, is physically equal to this and threatens to kill him. When he kidnaps Katsume, Ryō also wants to compete against Hayato. In the fight it turns out that Hayato has a weapon instead of his arm, a so-called ARMS. It turns out that Ryou is also in possession of such a weapon. Until now he always believed that his arm was injured in an accident. It now turns out that these ARMS are experimental weapons made up of thousands of nanochips. They were planted on four people, including Ryō and Hayato, when they were younger, replacing certain limbs. However, for a long time neither knew of their fate. The organization Egrigori, which created the ARMS, is now looking for the four test subjects with their own members, who are also equipped with ARMS, the so-called Keith series.

Such an agent of the Egrigori now appears at the school and Ryō and Hayato have to fight against him together. Soon they also meet the other two ARMS owners, Takashi Tomoe and the girl Kei Kuruma. The four must now fight against the organization Egrigori, by which they are hunted.

reception

The manga ARMS won the 1999 Shogakukan Manga Prize in the Manga category.

In Splashcomics Brigitte Schönhense describes the first volume as action-packed and exciting, the characters are interesting and the plot has potential. However, some actions are implausible and the idea behind the action is not new. The drawings have an unmistakable style that is reminiscent of Spriggan's predecessor . Fights are staged dynamically and bloody details are presented.
