Prospect Hummer is an EP by the American experimental band Animal Collective from Baltimore . It is considered an accompaniment to the studio album Sung Tongs from 2004.

History of origin

On a European tour in mid-2004, the group in Edinburgh was made aware of the British folk singer Vashti Bunyan by Kieran Hebden . Bunyan was eventually persuaded to record vocals for all songs (with the exception of "Baleen Sample"). Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Deakin are featured throughout the EP; Geologist, who was unable to take part in the tour due to his working hours, is also only featured on the song "Baleen Sample". It took them three days to record three songs.

The first two songs are actually outtakes from recording sessions for Sung Tongs , but they were re-recorded with Bunyan.

Bunyan said of the recordings:

“My daughter says she could hear me smile on the title track [...] and so did I. I loved having the freedom to sing how I wanted to. I was still trying to find my voice after years of burying it. "

The release of the EP on Fat Cat Records in 2005 led Vashti Bunyan to sign a contract with Fat Cat. She wrote, recorded and released her second album there, Lookaftering . She ended a thirty year hiatus .
