Campfire Songs is the third album by the experimental band Animal Collective from Baltimore . It was recorded in November 2001 and then released in March 2003 on Catsup Plate, later on the band's own label Paw Tracks.

History of origin

The album contains five songs that were played and recorded in one piece. Although the album was made in November, the songs were produced outside on a house porch in Maryland . Three Sony MiniDisc recorders were used with Sony ECM-MS907 microphones, which were strategically placed around the tape. Background noise and field recordings were also recorded and later integrated into the songs. The album was mixed at Avey Tare's apartment in Bushwick and ultimately mastered with Nicholas Vernhes.

Panda Bear told us about the recordings and the ideas for this album in an interview in 2005:

“We had the idea for a while to make something really warm-sounding and inviting, at least three or four years. We wanted to make it feel like a campfire and that made us think of Campfire Songs, where you can also sing along with a group of people and everyone is together and feels safe and good. It wasn't actually spontaneous or improvised. [...] We just worked for a month or so to harmonize the transitions between the songs. I still think the transition from Queen Of My Pictures to Doggy is one of the best things we have ever done. I was also really excited about my singing on Campfire Songs I think because I felt like I was doing things that were difficult for me ”

occupation

The three Animal Collective members on this album are Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Deakin, who is playing here for the first time. It is their only album with this line-up. Although Geologist did not play along, he was present during the recording and worked with the recording equipment. At that time, the Animal Collective didn't even exist. Instead, Campfire Songs should not only be the name of the album, but also that of the artist. Nevertheless, in the newer copies of the album booklets Animal Collective .

Miscellaneous

About a week before the recordings, they played the entire album live at the Tonic pub in New York City with the audience seated next to them. Campfire Songs is one of the two Animal Collective albums, which includes a booklet with all of the lyrics. The other album of this type is Strawberry Jam from 2007. The original Catsup Plate version of the album has been sold out since 2008. It was re-released by Paw Tracks Records on January 26, 2010.

reception

The album receives 3.5 out of 5 stars at allmusic . The critic Gregory Heany wrote there:

“The airy beauty of the vocal harmonies and the flowing transitions between the songs show the intention and the foresight and so a series of tracks is created, which are more musical than pure soundscapes, but also not songs in the traditional sense. While Campfire Songs is nowhere near as dense and kinetic as Animal Collective's later work should be, it shows her ability for layered harmony and experimental song structures, which make this album a fine part for atmospheric listening to headphones. "
