(2001)

Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished is the first music album by the experimental band Animal Collective from Baltimore . It was released in August 2000 under the artist name "Avey Tare and Panda Bear". It was first released on CD on the band's own Animal label (now known as Paw Tracks ) with a small limitation. It was thenre-releasedon FatCat Records in2003 as a double CD with the follow-up album Danse Manatee (2001). There it is also available on vinyl.

History of origin

All songs were written between 1997 and 1999 by Avey Tare (real name: David Portner) - with the exception of "Penny Dreadfuls", which he wrote at the age of 16. Portner and Panda Bear (Noah Lennox actually) took the acoustic guitar and the drums live on a Tascam -48-1 / 2 "-8-track recorder in Portner's bedroom in Baltimore during the summer 1999. The piano pieces along with the overdubs were Recorded in the bedroom of Portner's parents, Portner wanted the guitar to have a "nagging and jarring sound to create an uncomfortable feeling".

An old Roland SH-2 synthesizer that the brother of the later Animal Collective band member, Geologist (actually Brian Weitz) found in a camp, was used for the bass sounds. The drums were played with jazz brooms so that the album would be reminiscent of other albums such as Ocean Rain by Echo & the Bunnymen or "Forever Changes" by Love . Avey Tare would dictate the drum patterns through beatboxing . Other sounds, such as most of "Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished", were created using looped feedback .

Artwork

The album's original cover was found by Avey, who thought it would go nicely with the album. The album was supposed to be released under Avey Tare's name, but he was so impressed with Panda Bear's drumming that he put Panda's name on the cover as well. The method of simply putting the band members who played along on the cover - instead of the project name Animal Collective - lasted until the album Campfire Songs (2003).

With the original publication on Animal Records, there was a self-deprecating text in the album booklet with the following story

“Not long ago a young boy named Avey and his friend Panda Bear roamed the patch work which covers the land (some call it forest). They were looked upon by Pan and raised by fairies and the Angels of light who play deep within the Wood. 'Let's make the music of childhood,' Avey shouted one day as the two played. Panda thought this idea was a good one. 'I can use my magical Rhythm sticks and you can play your Sun harp,' he said. So the two began to create melodies and Panda brought rhythms from every direction while Avey sang. All of the songs were about wooden toys and invisible friends and filled with the light of the forest. This is the first group of songs they played. "

reception

Brent S. Sirota awards 8.9 / 10.0 points to the album and writes on August 1, 2000 at Pitchfork Media :

“'Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished' is not only outstanding, but one of the most original sounding albums out there. This record, as I've said, marries the pleasant and the violent and is not for timid ears: the sparkling pop never strays far from the lacerating noise. The lyrics are largely indecipherable but occasional gems and wonderful turns of phrase emerge from the bright din. "

“'Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished' is not only one of a kind, it's also one of the most original albums out there. This album marries the beautiful and the violent and is not for shy ears: the glittering pop never strays too far from the tearing noise. The lyrics are mostly incomprehensible, but now and then you can hear wonderful phrases and linguistic gems out of the dazzling shimmer of music. "

The album received 4/5 stars at allmusic . The critic Francois Couture writes:

"Quirky avant-pop where surprises abound but always stay on the catchy track. You might find them too weird for your straight tastes or too catchy for your weird tastes. Then again you might find them to be the best of both worlds. "

“Lively avant-pop, which surprises, but always remains accessible. You may find them too strange for your normal tastes or too normal for your strange tastes. But then you could also find the best of both worlds. "
