Strawberry Jam is the seventh studio album by the American experimental band Animal Collective . It was released in September 2007 and was their first album on Domino Records . The titles and list of titles were revealed by Geologist on May 16, 2007 in the Collected Animals Internet forum. The press reaction was mostly positive about Strawberry Jam as the new sound was seen as a big step forward for the band. The album was able to place in the Billboard Top 200 Charts and reached the highest position # 72.

History of origin

The album was recorded at Wave Lab Studios in Tucson , Arizona. Band member Geologist explains on the band's internet forum why they chose this studio to record:

“Dave [Portner aka Avey Tare] and I were talking about locations a few months ago and one of us said it might be nice to do the next album in a desert and everyone was like, yeah, man we haven't got that yet made, and it looks like it might go with our songs and how we want them to sound. That may not make sense to everyone except us, because when you think of the desert, you think of sharp guitars, Morricone soundtracks and Jim Morrison with the spirit of an Indian, but we don't really see it that way. We checked out a lot of studios from Southern California to New Mexico and settled on one in Tucson. I've also lived in the Tucson area for about a year and a half of my life. "

- Brian Weitz (Geologist)

Scott Colburn, the sound engineer for Strawberry Jam and Feels , also knew the owner of the Wave Lab studio. According to band member Panda Bear, it was a conscious decision to record the album in a desert setting.

In a pre-release interview, guitarist Deakin spoke to Billboard and described the album as "edgy" and making you shiver. According to the interview, most of the songs on the album were played on the band's live shows between 2005 and 2006, but there were "nonetheless a few new songs that we would have never played live".

Two songs on the album were played intensively on the 2005/2006 tours, Safer and Street Flash , which however did not appear on the album. Avey Tare wrote to fans that the band had recorded the songs in the studio, but had decided against taking them on the album - "partly because of their length [s]". Safer eventually became the B-side of the album's first single, Peacebone , while Street Flash and other holdovers from the 2008 recording sessions appeared on the EP Water Curses .

About the content of the song Peacebone , Panda Bear told the BBC in an interview :

“I just blend visual images from different places into one another. […] But it always comes back to the chorus, which is about having an obsession with the past, which I don't see culturally in myself. Music should be more than just something to stomp to - it should be more interactive. For us it's not always about writing a good song - we want to play with your ears in terms of colors and space with sound. "

Title and cover

The name Strawberry Jam comes from the singer and drummer Panda Bear when he and the band were on a plane and flew to Greece for a gig. When he received his food package, he opened the packaging with the strawberry jam that was allocated for the bread. As he removed the sleeve from the package, he “admired” the look of the shimmering jam and said he wished the production of their new album would just sound like what the jam looked like: “Something really synthetic, hot and futuristic, so to speak looks ”, but also“ spicy and sweet, downright aggressive in terms of taste ”sounds.

Avey Tare created and photographed the album cover - squashed strawberries and thick strawberry jam. Further layout and design comes from Rob Carmichael, with whom Animal Collective had already collaborated on other projects.

Internet leak

The album's internet leak occurred on June 12, 2007. However, it was remarkable because three songs were always launched within a few weeks. Geologist wrote on the Collected Animals forum that the first promo copies of the album contained a digital watermark and that every journalist's name was embedded in every extracted file. On June 19, 2007, a letter was sent to music journalists from the band's press secretary. He addressed the leaking of the first three songs:

“Last week three songs leaked from the new Animal Collective album. Within minutes we were able to trace the leak back to a journalist's CD. This person got in more trouble than you can imagine and was almost fired. The person was also forced to write apologies to a lot of people and the manager of Domino Records . "

Panda Bear spoke to Shout Mouth about the band's thoughts on the leak:

“The only thing we're really upset about with the leak is that it's just parts of the album. I think there are six songs out there now. The listeners can't even experience the entire album, which is really annoying for all of us. So, leaker, if you hear that now [speaking directly into the microphone], upload the other three songs too, man! Pronto! "

- Panda Bear

The remaining three tracks -  Fireworks , Cuckoo Cuckoo, and Derek  - appeared on July 4, 2007.

reception

The press reaction was mostly positive about Strawberry Jam as the new sound was seen as a big step forward for the band. The album was able to place in the Billboard Top 200 Charts and reached the highest position # 72.

Daniel Gerhardt writes on Plattentests.de about the album, which he rated with 7/10 points:

“Strawberry jam may not always succeed in bringing together its many individual parts in a really meaningful way. The greatest achievement of this music is anyway the consistency with which it demystifies itself and holds up a mirror to half the world. At the end of the day it's very simple: If you want to ask Animal Collective whether they're actually stupid, you should take a look at what's going on in front of or behind your own front door. "

dave [Portner] and i were talking a few months back about environments to record and one of us was like maybe it'd be sweet to make this next one a desert record and then everyone was like yeah man we haven ' t done that yet and it seems like it could fit the songs and the way we want them to sound. that might not make sense to anyone but us because when you think of the desert you think of twangy guitars and morricone soundtracks and jim morrison walking with the ghost of an indian, but we don't really see it that way. we looked at a bunch of studios from southern california to new mexico and settled on one we liked in tucson. plus I've spent about a year and a half of my life living in the tucson area.
