Feels is the sixth studio album by the experimental band Animal Collective from Baltimore . It was released on FatCat Records in September 2005. Two singles, "Grass" and "The Purple Bottle", were released on the same label. The album is considered a breakthrough for the band and made them known internationally.
The first copies of the album included a bonus CD with live material.
History of origin and tour
The album is again a collaboration between all four members. Well-known guest musicians were also present during the production of the album: On the one hand, the former múm frontwoman Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir sang and the American composer and multi-instrumentalist Eyvind Kang is also present on the album.
The release of Feels was followed by the band's longest tour to date, which lasted until autumn 2006 and took them to Australia and New Zealand for the first time. They have appeared across North America and at many European festivals, including headlining the Carling Tent at Reading and Leeds Festivals . On these tours they also played many songs that were later featured on the Strawberry Jam album .
Cover
The cover is reminiscent of the work of the artist Henry Darger . The cover creator, Animal Collective singer Dave Portner (aka Avey Tare), is a huge fan of Darger's work, but didn't think of Darger when he created the cover. He found a children's etiquette guide on the street and thought, "the images matched the sound and lyrics" of the album perfectly.
reception
The album was voted one of the top 100 albums in 2005 by the Amazon.com editorial team and also appeared on the Pitchfork Media list of the best 200 albums of the 2000s at # 50. Pitchfork also rated the album with 9.0 / 10 points.
At Plattentests.de 8/10 points were given to the album and there Stefan Färber writes about the album:
"" Feels "is, especially compared to the masterpiece" Here Comes the Indian ", a good step towards pop, but at the same time manages to preserve the old, typical qualities of Animal Collectives. Praise the old weird America . "
