Prostitution in Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prostitution in Switzerland is legal in terms of supply and consumption. Also brothels allowed. The Switzerland is one relating to the prostitution of the most liberal countries.

history

In Switzerland, prostitution has been legal for women since 1942 and for everyone since 1992. 1992 was Sexualstrafrecht revised since then pandering and passive pimping no longer punishable. However, prostitution has not been completely decriminalized because, according to the Federal Supreme Court's compulsory (civil law) judgment, it is still immoral. Thus there is a paradoxical legal situation.

The agreement on the free movement of persons between Switzerland and the EU of June 21, 1999, which was extended to Romania and Bulgaria in 2009 , led to an increase in the number of offers.

In 2013, boxes were built in the Altstetten district of Zurich (such as Strichplatz Depotweg ) and a street line was closed. However, the measure was also criticized as restrictive by several organizations.

In January 2014, it became public knowledge that inmates of the La Pâquerette therapy department in the Champ-Dollon remand prison near Geneva were allowed to visit prostitutes accompanied by social therapists .

scope

It is estimated that between 13,000 and 25,000 people across the country work in prostitution with annual sales of around CHF 3.5 billion. In the canton of Geneva there were 800 people working as prostitutes in 2004 and over 4,100 in 2012.

Legal situation

The cantonal regulations must also be observed when practicing prostitution .

Taxes and social security contributions

Prostitution is considered an economic activity. Income from sex work is subject to tax and social security contributions must be paid.

Protection of minors

According to Art. 195 of the Swiss Criminal Code , it is a criminal offense to bring a person under the age of 18 to prostitution. However, the suitor of a prostitute over the age of 16 did not commit an offense in Switzerland until 2013.

Foreign prostitutes

Foreign prostitutes need a work visa .
