Provincial road Elberfeld – Hitdorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Provincial Road Elberfeld – Hitdorf was a classified road of the Prussian provincial administration of the Rhine Province . The Provinzialstraße led from the town of Elberfeld, which was independent until 1929 (today a district of Wuppertal ) to Hitdorf (today a district of Leverkusen ) on the Rhine . From there there were ferry connections to Cologne , so that the road also provided the connection to Cologne.

The road partly follows even older hollow and traffic routes. For example, the Wuppertaler Kölner Straße is documented as a historical ravine .

The route of the Provinzialstraße is historically significant in that it linked the economy of the Bergisch region with the Rhine port in Hitdorf, which was very important before the railway was built. A large part of the Bergisch manufactory products were sold to the west via this port.

Today, large parts of the road are classified as state road 427 and federal road 229 .

course

Wuppertal

In today's Wuppertal area, the course of the road begins on the wall , leads over the Wupper bridge and the Isländer Bridge towards the south. There the Provinzialstraße continued on the street Johannisberg (at that time a ravine where the local situation was Am Hohlenweg ) and the Kölner Straße , which explains the name of this street leading to Cologne. The further course went via Steinbeck , the Cronenberger Straße , which at that time led to the independent municipality of Cronenberg , and the Hahnerberger Straße . The main street crosses the historic center of Cronenberg and then turns into Solinger Strasse , which leads to Solingen . The Wupper was then overcome at the Kohlfurther bridge , which also reached the city of Solingen.

Solingen

In Solingen today's streets Kohlfurther Brücke , Stöcken and Cronenberger Straße run to Solingen city center on the old provincial road. In the direction of Cologne, continue on Kölner Straße , then today's Bundesstraße 229 ( Grünewalder Straße , Neuenhofer Straße , Neuenkamper Straße , Aufderhöher Straße , Landwehrstraße )

Langenfeld

In Langerfeld, too, federal road 229 initially specifies the route. From the Solingen city limits it is the Elberfelder Straße , Hardt and Solinger Straße to the Immigrather town center. In Immigrath, the pedestrian zone on Solinger Strasse is part of the route. It then continues through Ganspohl and the Langenfeld town center along Hauptstrasse and Hitdorfer Strasse to the south.

Leverkusen

The end of the Provinzialstraße is reached in Hitdorf.
