Prudentius of Tarazona (* Armentia (Álava) ; † El Burgo de Osma ) was a student and assistant to St. Saturius of Soria ; later he became bishop of Tarazona . He is considered the patron saint of the cities of Nájera and Tarazona as well as the entire Álava region . His feast day is April 28th.

Vita

Prudentius' life dates are unclear; However, since he is said to have been connected to Saturius of Soria, whose year of death (around 570) is better known, one would have to place his year of birth around 550 and the year of death around 610. Other information is found more often, although it is regularly overlooked that one would then also have to change the dates of life of Saturius.

Even before he came to Saturius at the age of 15, Prudentius is said to have lived as a hermit; after the death of his mentor he went to Calahorra , where he was soon called to Tarazona, where he initially took over the office of archdeacon and is said to have become bishop later. He obtained some miraculous healings , but he withdrew to Soria , where he acted as mediator in the dispute between the bishop of El Burgo de Osma and the local clergy . There he fell ill and died.

Adoration

After his death a dispute broke out about his burial place; Finally he was put on his horse and left to decide what ultimately resulted in his burial in a cave at the foot of Monte Laturce near Clavijo , where over time a monastery dedicated to him - but now ruined - was built. Some of his bones are said to have been transferred to the city of Nájera in the Middle Ages and some to Logroño .

Venerated as a saint by the people for a long time, his name found its way into the cartular of the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla as early as 759 . In the 17th century he was elected the patron saint of Álava. Today Prudentius is worshiped mainly in the Basque province of Álava.

presentation

Medieval representations of the saint are unknown; the few modern representations show him mostly in the bishop's robe.
