Prunelart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prunelart (also called Prunelard ) is an almost extinct red wine variety from France . Rather small-grape, it makes strong and full-bodied red wines . It is only grown on 10 hectares in the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region in France. In the past it was often confused with the Malbec variety and had an excellent reputation. Olivier de Serres described the grape variety as early as the 16th century.

In 2009 the direct relationship to the Malbec was established. The almost extinct grape variety Magdeleine Noire des Charentes and the Prunelart variety are the parents of Malbec.

Since 2004, there are initiatives to Prunelart back to the authorized variety for the wine from Gaillac to explain.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

The leaf of the Prunelard, like that of the Malbec, is only slightly three-lobed

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy whitish-woolly, with a slight carmine-red tinge. The young leaves are initially thickly hairy and then only lightly hairy. The young leaves are spotted bronze (anthocyanin spots).
  • The medium-sized leaves are rounded (see also the article leaf shape ) and are wider than long, usually completely or only slightly three-lobed. The stem bay is closed in a V-shape. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized and tightly set in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is only slightly blistered, rough and soft to the touch.
  • The small to medium-sized grape is cylindrical and dense berries. The round berries are medium-sized and blue-black in color.

It is a rather difficult grape variety in terms of viticulture. It is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew , but susceptible to downy mildew and gray mold rot .
