The Greek island of Pserimos ( Greek Ψέριμος ( f. Sg. )) Is administered by the municipality of Kalymnos in the South Aegean region .

location

Pserimos is the largest side island of the municipality of Kalymnos. The island is located in the eastern Aegean Sea about 3.5 kilometers north of Kos and five kilometers west of Kalymnos. To the northeast, the shortest distance to the Bodrum Peninsula in Asia Minor ( Bodrum Yarımadası in Turkish ) is eight kilometers. There are some rocky islets in the immediate vicinity of the coast. About a kilometer to the west is the uninhabited island of Platy . The only place and port is Avlakia (Αυλάκια ( n. Pl. )) In the Bay of Pserimos (Όρμος Ψερίμου) on the south side.

The landscape of the arid island is predominantly characterized by low shrub vegetation . Pserimos is hilly to mountainous and reaches the highest point in the northeast at 268 m.

history

According to Homer's ship catalog, Pserimos was part of the Kalydna group. According to the only known inscription of Pserimos, the island was under the control of Kos in the 3rd century AD.

Pserimos has been known for capers since ancient times . Today the municipal administration promotes the cultivation of olive trees , meanwhile about 6000 trees have been planted northeast of the village. The approximately 70 inhabitants live mainly from fishing and tourism. Fish farming is carried out in the large bay in the east .

Apart from the 170 m long beautiful sandy beach lined with several taverns and the church at the northern exit of the village, which is dedicated to the Kimisis tis Panagias (Κοίμησης της Παναγίας Entschαναγίας, 'Dormition of the Virgin'), there are no other sights on the almost exclusively for day tourists visited island. The church Panagia Grafiotissa (Παναγία Γραφιώτισσα) is located about 1.5 km northwest of the village in a long bay .

An expansion to other small islands and remote communities is planned if the project is successful.
