features

The males of Nichols mouthbrooders reach a maximum length of 10 cm, females remain smaller. Nichols mouthbrooders have a typical cichlid shape and are moderately high backed. Females and young fish are bronze to silvery brown. A dark line runs from the corner of the mouth to the eye. Several spots lie in a row on the middle of the body between the gill cover and tail, another band of smaller spots lies above it.

Adult males have a dark, bronze-colored head, while the body turns metallic blue and shows several longitudinal rows of red dots. The points lie on the base of the scales and unite in the back third of the body to form three red, horizontal stripes. "Cheeks" and lower lip are blue. The dorsal fin is pointed and the hard-radiating part has a wide, black border that is very wide at the front and becomes narrower towards the back. The soft ray section is predominantly red with blue dots and lines. The anal fin is colored red and blue. The pelvic fins are very long and dark red to black and have a light blue leading edge. Caudal fin is rounded and shows blue and red spots along the fin rays. Males become taller with age.
