Pseudo Leon superbus is the only representative of the monotypic dragonflies - genus Pseudomonas Leon of the subfamily of Sympetrinae . It occurs between Arizona and Colombia .

Construction of the Imago

The animal reaches a length of 34 to 45 millimeters, of which 21 to 29 millimeters are on the abdomen . The hind wings are between 30 and 36 millimeters long. Young animals have pale faces that turn black very quickly with age. The compound eyes are light with dark stripes. The thorax is brownish with some dark brown stripes. With age it also becomes blacker and blacker. The wings are patterned very differently, but always have a dark band on the nodus . With the male's wings, which are black by nature, it can also happen that the entire hind wings turn black except for the tip. The forewings are usually black, with the exception of the inner half. The legs also change color from brown to black with age. The abdomen is brown and has V-shaped patterns before it turns black.

Similar species

The Pseudoleon superbus looks very similar to the Erythrodiplax umbrata . However, this usually has a less pronounced wing pattern.

Naming

The species was first described in 1848 under the name Celithermis superba by Hagen using an animal from Mexico . This holotype is in the Sommer's Collection . The animal got its current name when WF Kirby used it as a generotype of the genus Pseudoleon in 1889 .
