Pseudosimochromis curvifrons ( Pseudosimochromis = false simochromis + Latin : "curvus" = curved) is a species of cichlid that occurs in the middle and south of the East African Lake Tanganyika . The species is absent at the northern end of the lake.

features

Pseudosimochromis curvifrons can reach a length of 14 cm. It has a strongly flattened, relatively high body. The head is short and high with a steep, almost vertical forehead profile and a small, low-lying mouth. The northern population of the species is brownish olive to jade green , the southern blue. On the sides of the body, the fish has nine to ten vertical bands, which, depending on the mood, are sharply defined or completely invisible. The fins are grayish. The dorsal fin is a little darker and has an orange border. The males show orange egg spots on the anal fin.

Way of life

Pseudosimochromis curvifrons is rare and inhabited, like the species of the genus Simochromis , on the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika. It feeds on the algae growing on it. The fish avoids greater depths and is mainly observed in areas above a water depth of ten meters. Pseudosimochromis curvifrons is a mouthbrooder . Eggs and fry up to a length of 2.2 cm are taken into the mouth by the female for protection.

Systematics

The species was the Belgian 1942 ichthyologists Max Poll by the scientific name Simochromis curvifrons described and 1977 mainly because of of Simochromis different head shape by Nelissen the newly established genus Pseudosimochromis assigned.
