Pseudotropheus joanjohnsonae , also called Labidochromis joanjohnsonae or Melanochromis joanjohnsonae , is a species of cichlid that is endemic to the island of Likoma in the East African Lake Malawi . The species was released by humans off the island of Thumbi West. Johnson, the author of the first description, named the species after his wife. The fish species is sometimes offered in specialist aquarium stores under the name "Perle von Likoma".

features

Pseudotropheus joanjohnsonae can reach a total length of ten cm, has an elongated, laterally slightly flattened body and a pronounced sexual dimorphism . Males are of an intense blue iridescent basic color. In certain moods (courtship, fear, at night) they can show seven to nine dark transverse bands. The blue dorsal fin is lined with white to light blue, underneath is a black to blue-black longitudinal band. In the rear area the dorsal fin has yellow to orange spots that resemble the egg spots of the anal fin. The anal fin is light blue at the base, in the soft-rayed section and at the edge, otherwise black. There are three to seven egg spots on the anal fin. The pectoral fins are transparent, the pelvic fins black with a light blue front edge. The caudal fin is blue, brightly lined and sometimes spotted orange.

Females and juveniles are pearly gray-green to blue-green and show some orange to ocher-colored, wavy longitudinal stripes on the sides. The gill covers are colored bright blue, the dorsal fin green. As with the males, there are orange points in the rear area, similar to the egg spots of the anal fin. The anal fin is transparent at the base, otherwise orange and has two to three red egg spots. The pectoral fins are transparent, the pelvic fins orange with a white front edge. The caudal fin is spotted orange.

Like all haplochromine cichlids, Pseudotropheus joanjohnsonae is an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood.
