The pretzel parrot ( Psittacella brehmii ) is a species of bird belonging to the genus of the parakeet . The species is endemic to the island of New Guinea .

It is named after the German zoologist Alfred Brehm .

features

At approx. 24 cm and weighing 94 to 120 g, the Brehm parrot is by far the largest parakeet. The male has a gray beak, the head is dark brown with a yellow stripe on the side. The neck and back are banded green and black, the wings, the belly and the upper side of the tail are green, the lower surface of the tail is brownish. The female lacks the yellow head stripe and the breast is banded yellow-black. The young resemble the female.

Habitat

Its habitat includes tropical mountain forests and subalpine shrubbery zones at an altitude of 1500 to 2600 m, on the Huon Peninsula also up to 3800 m.

nutrition

He eats fruits, seeds, berries, buds and leaves.
