Pterocactus hickenii is a species of the genus Pterocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Pterocactus hickenii grows with numerous, spherical to cylindrical shoots. They are 2 to 5 centimeters long and 1.0 centimeters in diameter and are covered with numerous glochids . The needle-like, straight, stiff, brownish to black and sometimes yellowish thorns are 1 to 2 centimeters long. The roots are bulbous and consist of several segments connected by thinner parts.

The terminal, yellowish, pink-edged flowers have a stem-like base and are up to 3 centimeters long and large in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pterocactus hickenii is widespread in southern Argentina in the provinces of Chubut and Santa Cruz and in southern Chile in the province of Aisén at altitudes of up to 500 meters. The species was first described in 1919 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . The plants were collected near Comodoro Rivadavia by Cristóbal M. Hicken.

  • Pterocactus skottsbergii (Britton & Rose) Backeb.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
