Ptilium crista-castrensis is a species of moss from the order of the Hypnales . In German, the species is genuine feather moss or Farnwedelmoos called.

features

The stems of the gametophytes are very regularly pinnate-like to feather-like. They form dainty, broadly lanceolate fronds that resemble ostrich feathers and can be up to 15 cm long. The branches stick out horizontally. The plants are strong and shiny green.

The paraphyllia are broadly lanceolate. The leaves are crescent-shaped on one side. They have a broad egg-shaped base and are drawn out like a long awl at the tip. The leaf margin is flat. The leaves are folded lengthways and sawn to the middle. A vein is missing or short and double. The lamina cells are elongated (prosenchymatous), there are few square cells in the leaf wings.

The capsule is curved and almost horizontal. The capsule lid is conical and pointed with a wart. Sporogons are rare.

Distribution and locations

The species is widespread in the northern hemisphere and predominantly inhabits the montane and subalpine altitudes . It is absent in the lowlands. They grow mainly on weakly acidic forest soils and on rocks rich in humus.
