Puccinia ekmanii is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of Leersia monandra . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. Their distribution area is in Venezuela .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia ekmanii can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia ekmanii grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The species evidently lacks aecia and spermogonia . The yellow-brown uredia grow on both sides of the host's leaves. Their yellowish to golden uredospores are usually broadly oval to ovate, 23–27 × 18–23 µm in size and finely spiky. The parts of the species are black-brown, exposed early and compact. The hazelnut brown teliospores are two-celled, usually elliptical in shape and 29–36 × 18–23 µm in size; their hyaline or yellowish stalk is up to 110 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia ekmanii only includes Venezuela .

ecology

The host plant of Puccinia ekmanii is Leersia monandra . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species apparently has a development cycle with Telien and Uredien, which manages without change of host; Spermogonia and aecia are apparently absent.
