Frank Dunn Kern

Frank Dunn Kern (born June 19, 1883 in Reinbeck (Iowa) , † September 28, 1973 in State College (Pennsylvania) ) was an American botanist , phytopathologist and professor at Pennsylvania State University . His botanical-mycological author's abbreviation is " F.Kern ".

Life

Kern studied at the University of Iowa and earned his bachelor's degree in 1904 . In 1907 he earned his Masters degree from Purdue University . From 1904 to 1910 he worked for the US Department of Agriculture and the Purdue Agricultural Experiment Station. His first work on plant diseases comes from this time. He also had a few brief research stays at the New York Botanical Gardens and Columbia University . His first research work focused in particular on the genus Gymnosporangium , on which he wrote his Ph.D. in 1911. -Thesis at Columbia University. In 1910 he moved to Pennsylvania State University as head of botany. In 1922, the university established a graduate college for the first time , the first dean of which was Kern. Kern held both positions until his retirement in 1950.

Kern wrote over 80 scientific papers.
