Pueblo Viejo (Spanish for old village ) is a small village in the Iruya department of Salta Province in northwest Argentina . It is located near the village of Iruya and is connected to the Campo Carreras district of the neighboring village of Rodeo Colanzulí , 3 km south of it, via the unpaved road Ruta Provincial 165-S .
The village belongs to Finca Santiago , the first community estate in Argentina and has around 190 inhabitants (as of 2001 census). This corresponds to an increase of 12.5% compared to the 1991 census (168 inhabitants). The place lives from agriculture, mainly small livestock, as well as from tourism. There is a small handicraft business.
In the center of the village there is the "Congreso de Tucumán" school (escuela Nº4143), an infirmary and a chapel that was rebuilt in the 1990s by the residents.
According to historical records, Pueblo Viejo is the oldest village in Iruya Department . It is believed that the first inhabitants of the region settled here.
Access
Part of the route to Pueblo Viejo can be covered from Iruya by bus via Ruta 133 . The bus stops at the Toroyoc stop , about 6 km from Iruya.
From there, on the opposite side of the river, a steep footpath leads up to the village in about half an hour from an unsigned and not easily recognizable point (location: 22 ° 50 ′ S , 65 ° 14 ′ W ).
Alternatively, Pueblo Viejo can be reached via the neighboring town of Campo Carreras along the unpaved road Ruta Provincial 165-S . In the months of November to April this is often only possible on foot or with off-road vehicles, as parts of the route can be under water.
