The Pulkau winged altar is a late Gothic winged altar created around 1515/1525 , which is considered the main work of the Austrian Danube School . It stands in the Pulkau branch church in the town of Pulkau in the Hollabrunn district in Lower Austria .

history

The winged altar was built around 1515/1525. The altar was renovated in 1820 and restored to its original state in 1948/1949. In 2006 it was professionally cleaned by the Federal Monuments Office.

Structure and equipment

In the shrine there are larger-than-life figures, the Man of Sorrows between Bartholomew and Sebastian , on the side and between the canopies above are ten figures of saints, including Barbara , Katharina , St. Pantaleon, Achatius , Christophorus , St. Vitus and various bishops or abbots, at the feet of the Man of Sorrows are two angels offering chalices. In conversation Enge are Madonna and Child between St. Benedict of Nursia, the founder of an order of the Benedictine Order and St.. Bernhard von Clervaux as well as above Leopold between Stephanus and Laurentius .

The painting and sculpture are stylistically inconsistent. The overall design and the execution of the Predella panels were attributed to the master of the Historia Friderici et Maximiliani and the master of the Pulkauer Altar . Hans Schlais is mentioned in the chronicles as a master carver
