The Ellrich pumped storage power plant is being planned by the construction company Strabag . It should have an output of 640 MW and be located near Nordhausen on the southern edge of the Harz Mountains . The location is included in the “Pumped Storage Cadastre Thuringia” commissioned by the Ministry of Economics in 2011.

Project data

The lower basin is planned in the valley of the Bere tributary Fuhrbach with an area of around 40.8 ha. The Fuhrbach is to be dammed with a 48 meter high stone embankment .

The upper basin is to be built south of Rothesütte on the Kleiner Ehrenberg. Both basins will have a volume of 6.3 million m³. This enables a full load operation of 6 hours.

The construction costs are estimated at up to 750 million euros. Commissioning is planned for 2021 at the earliest.

criticism

The project was highly controversial among the population and among environmental protection associations and was the subject of numerous protests, political controversies and media reports from the start.
