The Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Power Plant is a pumped storage power plant in Tianhuangping , Anji County in the Chinese province of Zhejiang . The power plant has an installed capacity of 1,836  megawatts and uses six reversible Francis turbines . Construction began in 1993 and in 2004 the power plant was operational. It is one of the largest pumped storage power plants in Asia; it is currently the fifth largest in terms of performance.

Tianhuangping Dam (Lower Basin)

The Tianhuangping Dam in CFRD construction dams the Da Xi brook to the lower basin. The reservoir has a usable space of 6,770,000 m³. There is an uncontrolled side overflow as flood relief , which is designed for a discharge of 536 m³ / s.

Upper basin

The water is pumped from the lower basin into the upper basin, which has a usable space of 6,760,000 m³. It was artificially cut into the mountain and created with the help of four saddle dams. When electricity is generated, the water flows down through three 882 m long pressure pipes with a 7 m diameter to the power plant, which is located above the lower basin. Before the water reaches the pump turbines, it splits into six branch pipes.

power plant

The six branch pipes supply the six turbines with head water. Each Francis turbine has an installed capacity of 306 MW and a maximum capacity of 336 MW. The turbines and generators are located in a cavern power plant with the dimensions: 198.7 m long, 21 m wide and 47.7 m high. After electricity has been generated, the water is drained into the lower reservoir and the whole process can start over.

The cost of the pumped storage power plant was the equivalent of $ 900 million. An expansion to 2016 MW is planned.
