Punch ( Poonch ) was a princely state of British India in the south-west of Kashmir . In 1596 the Mughal appointed the Raja of Loran governor of the area, of which Punch became the capital in 1542. 1819 conquered the Sikh - Maharaja Ranjit Singh large parts of Kashmir and sat Faiz Talab Khan from the dynasty of the Dogra Raja as one. After the British victory in the First Sikh War in 1846, Punch became part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir . In 1850 it was given to Raja Moti Singh, the son of the Prime Minister of Kashmir, as a fief.

1876-1894 Punch had a state post with its own stamps . 1901–1936 it was even an independent princely state. In 1935 it had an area of 4215 km² and 422,000 inhabitants. Since the First Indo-Pakistani War , the area has been divided between Pakistan ( Punch in Asad Kashmir ) and India ( Punch in Jammu and Kashmir ).
