Punch ( Hindi पुंछ , English Poonch ) is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the far west of the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It forms the administrative seat of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 26,854. In 2001 it was 23,442. 44% Hindus and 33.5% Muslims live in the city of Punch .
Punch is located at an altitude of 981 m on the north bank of the river of the same name, about 7 km from the Pakistani border. The river valley is separated from the rest of Jammu and Kashmir by the Pir Panjal mountain range . A trunk road leads to Rajouri in the south and on to Jammu . The Mughal Road leads over a 3505 m high pass and connects since 2007 Punch with Shopian in the Kashmir Valley . There is a bus connection between the cities of Rawalakot in Pakistan and Punch.
