The Punch ( English Poonch River ; above the city of Punch also Suran ) is a left tributary of the Jhelam in Kashmir .
course
The punch rises on the western flank of the Pir Panjal in the northeast of the Punch district in the Indian part of Kashmir. It initially flows south and later turns north-northwest. At river kilometer 100 he passes the district capital Punch on the right bank of the river. The river now flows to the west and gradually to the southwest. It crosses the border to Pakistan about 70 km above the mouth . On the left bank of the river 50 km above the estuary is the small town of Kotli , the administrative center of the district of the same name . Finally, the punch flows into the northeast part of the reservoir of the Mangla Dam . The punch has a length of 150 km. It drains an area of around 4050 km². At the Kotli gauge ( catchment area : 3210 km²) the mean discharge is 126 m³ / s. The catchment area of the Punch receives the most rainfall (290 mm / month) in the monsoon season in the summer months of July and August. Accordingly, these are the months of the punch with the highest drainage.
Hydropower plants
At Punch several hydropower plants are currently being planned or under construction. The Rajdhani hydropower plant with 132 MW is being built 12 km above the estuary. The following hydropower plants are planned in Pakistan upstream of the river : Gulpur hydropower plant (at river kilometer 28; 102 MW), Kotli hydropower plant (100 MW) and Sehra hydropower plant (130 MW).
fauna
The Tor putitora , one of the largest carp fish, lives in Punch and its tributaries . To protect it, the river system on the Pakistani side was declared the River Poonch Mahasheer National Park .
