Shopian (also Shupiyan ) is a city ( Municipal Committee ) in the west of the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It forms the administrative seat of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 16,360. In 2001 it was still 12,396. Almost 86% Muslims and 13% Hindus live in the city .
The city of Shopian is located in the southwestern part of the Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Rambiara at an altitude of 2057 m . The Pir Panjal ridge rises to the west and south of Shopian . Shopian is 40 km south of the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar , and 30 km west of Anantnag . The Mughal Road leads from Shopian west across the Pir Panjal to punch .
The city of Shopian is divided into 13 wards .
