Punk in Indonesia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Punk has existed in Indonesia since the 1980s. The subculture developed into a broader youth movement from 1994 onwards, after bands, due to international music television, made their way into the Indonesian music charts with punk rock , ska and hard rock . A punk scene is particularly present in the capital Jakarta today . Especially in conservative areas, however, the scene is subject to political and social persecution.

Repression and re-education

Members of the punk movement face state repression and persecution by ultra-conservative and religious groups in parts of Indonesia . Since tattoos and long hair were outlawed as identifying features of criminals and opposition activists under the former Indonesian dictator Suharto , wearers of this fashion typical of the punk scene are still socially discriminated against.

Especially during the Suharto dictatorship, violent attacks by the police due to critical song lyrics by the band ended punk events. When the regime was overthrown in 1998 - after more than 30 years of a right-wing military dictatorship - the demonstrating students included several members of the first and second generation of the Indonesian punk movement. To this day, most of them see themselves more as a political, but also interreligious counter-movement ("counterculture"). Even after Suharto's demise, there were repeated attacks or bomb threats by Islamist or nationalist ultra-conservative groups at punk events.

In 2011, 65 punks were arrested during a benefit punk rock concert in Aceh for possible violations of Sharia law, which has been in force since 2001 , and subjected to police re-education . Among other things, their hair was shaved, piercings removed and clothing removed.
