Punta Ballena (from Spanish ballena 'whale' ) is a headland in the north of Livingston Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . On the east side of the Cape Shirreff , the northern foothills of the John Paul II Peninsula , separating them on the shores of Bahía Mansa to Playa Ballena Norte in the north of Playa Ballena Sur in the south.
Scientists of the 45th Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1990–1991) named them that way because they found skeletons of whales in their vicinity .
