history
Puntas de Valdéz lay on the course of the historic Camino Nacional - a troop route that connected Montevideo with western Uruguay. With the construction of the Ruta 1 around 1930, the development of today's village began. This important road was inaugurated in 1937, the same year the local sports club Club Atlético Independiente was founded , which still exists today. By means of the legal regulation of the Ley 14.296 , Puntas de Valdéz was declared a pueblo (in German: ~ village) on November 14, 1974 . After the village had around 700 inhabitants until the 1990s, the population has grown significantly since then, thanks in particular to the public construction funding program MEVIR.
Infrastructure
Ruta 1, which used to go through the village, now bypasses it on the south side. Puntas de Valdéz is located near kilometer 61, which was exactly in the center of the village in the earlier course of the country road and is now on the southern edge of the village at the junction to the south towards Kiyú . The place is in an area characterized by the dairy industry. The multi-purpose building of the local administration ( Junta Local ), which includes a sports hall, forms the social center of the place . Puntas de Valdéz has had a polyclinic in the same building since 1987. In November 2010, Education Minister Ricardo Ehrlich opened a center for culture and adult education ( Centro MEC ) operated by his ministry in another part of the building . With the Escuela No. 26 , Puntas de Valdéz also has an all-day school with around 230 students that runs from the two-year preschool to the 6th school year.
