Pupilla altaica is a species of snail from the family of pupae , which belongs to the subordinate class of land snails (Stylommatophora). It occurs in the Russian part of the Altai Mountains.

features

The right-hand wound, egg-shaped to cylindrical housing is 2.5 to 3.2 mm high and 1.6 to 1.84 mm wide. It consists of 5.5 to 6.5 turns, which are strongly curved on the periphery. The apex is rounded and conical. The mouth is rounded and thickened by a strong, light-colored lip. Two teeth (teeth or denticles) protrude into the mouth, a parietal denticle and an angularis located deep in the mouth. The parietal denticle is short and pointed, while the angular denticle is a long, flat, moderately wide lamella. Very rarely, a palatal callus can also be formed. More often, one of the two parietal denticles may be reduced. The ring-shaped, whitish neck callus is strongly developed and shines through the shell. The navel is open. The sculpture consists of relatively coarse strips of growth on which weak periostracum strips are attached.

Similar species

The ornamentation and the shape of the shell are similar to the shell of the striped doll snail ( Pupilla sterrii ); however, this type differs in the reinforcement of the mouth. Pupilla sterrii has a parietal tooth and a palatal tooth.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Pupilla altaica has so far only been found at seven locations in the central Altai . These are between approx. 700 to 1500 m above sea level

Pupilla altaica lives in steppes and dry stony plains in the lower altitudes of the Altai. There it is associated with the ribbed grass snail ( Vallonia costata ), Vallonia kamtschatica and Gastrocopta theeli .

Taxonomy

The taxon was set up in 2009 by Stefan Meng and Matthias Hoffmann and named after the Altai. The type locality is in the central Altai, southeast of Inya, on the edge of the Chuya-Katun grasslands (N 50 ° 23.933 '/ E 086 ° 40.576') at 824 m above sea level.
