Pupilla kyrostriata is a species of snail belonging to the family of pupae , which belongs to the subordinate class of land snails (Stylommatophora). The name kyrostriata is derived from the ancient name of the Kura Riverand the strong striations of the housing surface.

features

The right-hand wound, cylindrical, tightly bifurcated case is 2.45 to 2.90 mm high and 1.45 to 1.60 mm wide. It is horn-brown and has 5.25 to 6.75 strongly curved whorls. The last passage is somewhat depressed with an elongated constriction between the edge of the mouth and the more or less clearly developed neck bulge. The surface of the case has irregular, rough stripes. In the round mouth there is a palatal, parietal and columellar tooth. Parietal and columellar teeth lie deep and the latter cannot always be seen when looking at the mouth vertically. The palatal tooth is elongated and corresponds to an elongated depression on the outside of the last turn.

Similar species

Pupilla kyrostriata is most similar to the Caucasian pupilla bipapulata . However, it differs in the average wider casing, the coarser stripes of the casing surface, the longer lower palatal fold and the lack of the upper palatal fold. Pupilla kyrostriata differs from Pupilla sterrii in its smaller housing, the presence of a columella fold and the elongated, strong palatal fold. Pupilla kyrostriata occasionally occurs together with Pupilla triplicata , from which it differs in the more curved circumferences and stronger striations of the surface.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Pupilla kyrostriata occurs in the Caucasus in the catchment area of the Kura and Aras rivers . So far it has been found in the states of Azerbaijan , Armenia, and Georgia .

The species prefers dry, stony habitats with little cover by grass and bushes. As a rule, she lives in a lime-poor subsoil.

Taxonomy

Housings of this taxon have been known for a long time, but were usually identified as a variant form of Pupilla triplicata or Pupilla sterrii . It was only in 2014 that Walther & Hausdorf discovered that it differs from both species.
