Pupilla seminskii is a species of snail from the family of the pupae , which belongs to the subordination of the land snails (Stylommatophora). It occurs in the Russian part of the Altai Mountains.

features

The right-hand wound, egg-shaped to slightly conical, somewhat compressed case is 2.65 to 2.85 mm high and 1.75 to 1.85 mm wide. The apex is rounded-conical. The 5.5 turns are well rounded on the periphery and increase regularly. The mouth is relatively large and rounded. The edge of the mouth is bent outwards and widened. In the side view, the last turn runs almost horizontally or rises very little. The mouth plane is at an angle of approx. 30 ° to the winding axis. The edge of the mouth itself is thin and fragile. The mouth has no teeth or calluses . The very small navel is open. The surface of the horn-colored housing shows very fine growth stripes.

Similar species

Pupilla seminskii differs from the moss pupa snail ( Pupilla muscorum ) by the more egg-shaped shell shape. The moss doll snail is significantly larger and, with somewhat the same width, significantly slimmer. The periphery of the whorls is more domed in the pupilla seminskii . Pupilla alluvionica is also significantly larger, comparatively broader and more cylindrical. The alpine diaper snail ( Pupilla alpicola ) also has a more cylindrical shell. This species also lives in very humid habitats.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Pupilla seminskii has so far only been found at the type locality: a rocky ridge a few hundred meters long and 20 meters high consisting of basic volcanic rocks. Pupilla seminskii was found on the south side and at the foot of this ridge between the fallen boulders. The type locality is east of the Seminskyi Pass (1717 m) along the Chuyan Strait in Seminskyi Khrebet, in the Russian part of the western central Altai (N 51 ° 02.554 '/ E 085 ° 38.134') at an altitude of 1760 m. The annual average temperature is −1.8 ° C, the annual rainfall 1000 to 1200 mm. Only 55 days are without frost.

The animals live in the detritus of scree fields between rocks up to a decimeter in size. Due to the size of the rock, the spaces between them are well ventilated and relatively dry. The surfaces of some of these boulders are covered with lichen and moss. Pupilla seminskii is associated with the following other snail species: Alpine diaper snail ( Vertigo alpestris Alder, 1838), Euconulus cf. fulvus (OF Müller, 1774), Nesovitrea hammonis (Ström, 1765) and Lindholmneme sp.

Pupilla seminskii seems to be specially adapted to this habitat and this microclimate. In grassy biotopes with an earthy substrate (without rubble) in the immediate vicinity it does not occur, or it is extremely rare there. In these biotopes, pupilla seminskii is represented by another, not yet described, pupilla species.

Taxonomy and nomenclature

The taxon was set up in 2009 by Stefan Meng and Matthias Hoffmann and named after the place where it was found in Seminskiy Khrebet, in western Central Altai. Since the species name, according to Derivatio nominis, was formed after a locality, it should be seminskiensis (or similar).
